it was a busy day. 3 C-sections, a biopsy, a septic baby with
PIE (and not the good kind), and a kid with anencephaly. an elevator in the middle of the NICU, nicknamed “the bunny hole” (named for the bunny suits people wear when they come in and out of it), brought us down to the rooms where the C-sections were done. our first C-section was quick– the doctor sliced open the uterus and let forth a fountain of amniotic fluid… and then pulled out a kid. the nurses grabbed it and quickly started rubbing, examining, and weighing. grace and i stood by as the nurse threw blood soaked towels our way and hoped we wouldn’t get splashed. next came a giant 9 pound baby, and then a tiny blue 6 pounder.
the excitement of the day centered around one of the last C-sections of the day. the baby was born with anencephaly. he came in with an entourage of doctors and nurses, met with respiratory technicians, and even more nurses.
the top of his head (and most of his brain) was missing starting from right above the eyelids, and you could see bright red brain tissue underneath the plastic wrap that protected it. i couldn’t tell if he had eyes or not– he didn’t open his eyes the entire time i was there. grace and i will take on his case tomorrow, if he’s still there.
while we were wating for this baby to arrive, our 12 hour day turned into 14. grace, cat, and i trudged out to our cars after the sun had already set. good thing i don’t have to get to work at the crack of dawn tomorrow.
one last thing– one of our NICU nurses… is Donnell’s mom!
