i’m alive!
i’ve finally moved my site over to a new server and a new blogging platform– hopefully this will keep the spammers at bay. time for an update:
on my last day of my IM rotation, i went down to the ER to see one of our “revolving door” admissions. he was a 96 y/o elderly asian male, cachectic and unresponsive to me calling his name. i put on gloves(the guy had a history of mrsa) and proceeded to tap him on the chest. he wakes up at once, opens his eyes and straining, he says, “ba-na-na”. now i’m standing there confused, because i had thought this guy was chinese speaking-only. so i repeated, “banana?” he raises his head off the bed, and looks at me, “i want a banana. for fooooood.” he then drops back into bed, and goes back to sleep.
me: how are you?
him:banana.
me:hello?
him: banana.
i give up.
now, i’m doing endocrine/IM in little armenia– yet another rotation full of patients who don’t speak my language. bah! so… my learning comes from the clinical pearls and random stories that the doc tells me… and playing with all the toys from the pharm reps. good times.

I like the new layout too, but I also was a huge fan of the gigantic couch layout from the last one.
