the birthday weekend fantastico

Monday, October 31st, 2005 at about 2:58 pm

yoshi rolli ended up having a day off on friday, so i spent the day lounging around and reading about coenzyme q10 and other oddities (like MUNNY! long live MUNNY! yes, i’m obsessed).

hawaiian volcano rolldinner, however, was fabulous– ryan, annie and i went to toro, my long lost sushi love of loves. we gorged ourselves on roll after roll… mmm. who knew chino had good sushi?

at the start of the daysaturday, we went to oak glen for apple picking. we started with a strange little tour of “colonial times” and the apple picking of yore. apparently, not having showers and microwaves make colonial people cranky.

the full bagan apple pie demonstration, cider making, and apple crisp eating later, we headed to the next orchard, where we ate masses of bbq and picked masses of arkansas black apples. afterwards, we stopped at another place for fresh cider and apple tasting. fuji? good. rome? not so good.

later, while the ryan and the mom napped in the car (weaksauce!), annie and i went roaming for pumpkins… but with no luck. we had to hike thru an orchard, past a log cabin with a recipe of ho cakes posted on it, all the way to a sad little field of hay with ugly pumpkins… and came back empty handed. boo.

i want my munny!

Friday, October 28th, 2005 at about 8:29 am

show me the munny! found via coolhunting:

kidrobot is having a party/auction on nov 3 to benefit the kids of hurricaine katrina. they’ll showcase a whole buncha these munny action figures decorated by a whole slew of artists. click here to see what people have been doing.

i actually just want a blank one and some markers/glitter/paint. it would be just like when i was a kid and the babysitters took me (and annie) to a place called “paint pals” and we would pick out random ceramic things to paint and destroy. only… this would be cooler… cause it’s some kind of wierd plasticy vinylly stuff and the ACTION FIGURE comes with 4 mysterious (mwa ha ha) accessories. i want the sunglasses and the cell phone.

a tale of two preceptors

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005 at about 8:31 pm

the new rotation started this week– makes me long for the days of lounging around the office with grace. boo. i have two preceptors this time.

when you walk into the first guy’s office, the first thing you notice is the smell of incense and the very asian, very minimalist decor. the office is small, one treatment room, one meditation room, and one random room o’ junk. i spend most of my days with this guy holding feet. every once in a while i hold a sacrum. it’s like cranial week… but without actually ever touching a head.

when you walk into the second guy’s office, the first thing i noticed was the stench of singed pot (which he later clarified as another plant, which i can’t remember the name of) and rottting deathness. at the entrance, a large leather dog facimilie guards funky foamy green couches. this office is larger– it’s a “wellness group” of doctors (mostly MDs) specializing in alternative therapies. this doc talks more– explaining and pimping all through the treatment session — which i’m thankful for. i fall asleep less there. of course, with all of the pimping comes homework. i have a paper to do, and random factoids to look up. i really don’t mind the extra work here and there, i actually feel like i may learn something.

the only thing i hate: the drive. the 110 takes me through the horror that is LA. the traffic is maddening– when i’m not slowed to a crawl, i’m fearing for my life as beemer after beemer decides to jump out in front of me and slam on the brakes or simply swerve from lane to lane with not so much as a hand signal to tell me to get out of the way. i come home with a sore jaw from all the teeth clenching i do on my commute.

a pumpkin shaped cake!

williams sonoma has a pan made just for this (although you could just use 2 bundt cake pans)! use their pumpkin spice streusel cake mix… and you’ve got it made.

while you’re at it, get this pan and make some pumpkin cheesecakes for halloween/me/any random thursday. pumpkin for all!

rollie pollies

Thursday, October 20th, 2005 at about 10:10 pm

54353990_74fa814222_m.jpgi found this article while browsing a medical journal today and immediately began to imagine a bunch of obsese dementia patients terrorizing the city.

can you imagine?

it was bad enough trying to do a pap on a small dementia patient– imagine trying to restrain a large one– and trying to avoid her kicks. oy.

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005 at about 7:39 pm

lomofisheye.jpg new toy! move down! my lomo fisheye came today– it’s lovely. made of the cheapest black and white plastic, it sports a monster lens (for a plasticam) and smells like chocolate. or vanilla. i can’t tell. it smells like dessert, though.

i’ve got a roll of film loaded and ready to go… time for pictures!

who wants to go exploring with me?

happy birth-month!

Monday, October 17th, 2005 at about 6:07 am

my birthday is still 2 weeks away, but the presents are already rolling in. woo! ryan bought me a “malm” dresser from ikea– to prevent me from keeping my clothes in the living room. the mom is giving me free camera-buying authoritiy– i may buy the sexy little tuxedo black canon sd30. and… maggie and steven want to take me out… and isn’t that present enough? i feel loved.

last night, ryan and i went to hear ralph nader speak at caltech. we squished ourselves into a packed auditorium — alongside strange looking (and strange smelling) supporters of the man. ralph was entertaining– making strange noises and dropping those happy one-liners that cause people to stand up and cheer. he even had a good 5 minutes of stand-up comedy. but alas, ralph and i disagree on many things… and after sitting for almost 2 hours in that cramped lecture hall, it was time to go… and now i don’t remember what he said.

oh well. back to my happy corporate life.
